Practices for Leaders to Build Resilience

Who Knows What is Good or What is Bad!

Snow in April – Tariffs on, then off, then on –layoffs yet not enough people to do the work.

Times like this, it is better to pause and reflect rather than respond out of fear and uncertainty.

If you are a leader and facing some of these dilemmas, you know that leadership is a long game.  Every day you need to show up and lead with clarity and enthusiasm.  In a word, you need to be resilient – the ability to recover quickly from challenges and crises.

Over the past few months, I have been writing down everything I have learned over the past decade, during my journey of building resilience.  Before shutting the computer off for the Easter Weekend, thought I would put  those practices here… for anyone who could use some ideas right now.

  1. Slow down to go fast.  Notice the chaos in your mind, quiet it, then focus on what is in front of you.
  2. Step back.  Widen your view and you widen your perspective.  You can see more options.
  3. Stop and listen.  In moments of quiet, your inner wisdom, your intuition will guide you.
  4. Select the most important task and focus on getting that done.  Peace comes from completing work that makes a difference.
  5. Celebrate accomplishments along the way.  Even small ones are worthy of appreciation.
  6. Reframe problems into possibilities.  There are always options, when taken will lead to more possibilities.
  7. Shake up your routine.  Change reveals new pathways.
  8. Take inventory of your beliefs.  If some are counterproductive, get rid of them.
  9. Prime your day with positive energy and emotion.
  10. Notice the words you use, particularly those that have a negative connotation.  Words create their outcome.
