36 hours into a 72-hour water fast! Temptations were everywhere: the bowl of fruit that sits on the counter; the leftovers in the fridge; EVERYTHING that lurked in the pantry…!
I was hungry. I was cranky. I felt weak and drained.
But I believed in the science that shows our body has the capacity to heal itself. Specifically, long fasts reset the immune system, boost stem cell production, improves healing, and shifts the metabolism from sugar burning to fat burning.
Yet, I wasn’t keen to do it. I rarely miss a meal. I couldn’t imagine going 3 days without putting anything in my mouth except water. Even my chewable vitamin C supplement was not recommended because the sugars would break the benefits of the fast!
But I had another motive. My guiding work for 2025 is RESET. What that means for me is that whenever I find myself thinking; I can’t or don’t want to, or making excuses, or feeling the fear of discomfort, I tell myself to consider a RESET.
Since the beginning of January, I have found myself saying RESET quite a few times. I’ve been amazed how many opinions and habits I hold that I never even question. As a coach, I am good at asking coachees to question their perspectives. This year, I am taking a stand with myself and checking in to see what a reset and how some retooling could benefit me.
The 3-day fast taught me a lot. My determination held and I reached my goal. I held to the fast and reintroduced food slowly, in spite of the cravings. Since then, I have committed to a varied pattern of intermittent fasting. I have learned to quiet my mind when it tells me I’m hungry. I am now aware that the message to eat so that I will feel better or eat because others are eating, is not a message that I should heed.
Above all, I discovered I can do hard things. I see possibilities and breakthroughs ahead! I’m excited about shaking things up and trying new things!
What does this experiment have to do with workplace productivity, you ask?
Everything. Start by noticing how many times do you do a task or engage in a conversation that is repetitive. Do those tasks and conversations move the needle on your progress or satisfaction at the end of the day?
Doing the right things, at the right time, and with the right energy will impact how productive you are at work. It starts by noticing your current state and strategies.
Then take an experimental mindset and see what you can reset and retool.
You can do it! And I can help!
